Our Book Drive for Read Aloud Delaware

rad“Every preschool child in Delaware should be read to one-on-one.” That is the goal of Read Aloud Delaware, a state-wide agency that is working to promote literacy.  To help achieve this effort, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Gallo Realty will be holding a NEW book drive through November 1st.  Drop off your NEW book(s) in the reception area of one of their 3 offices in Lewes, Rehoboth and Bethany Beach.  The books should be appropriate for children from 0 - 12 years of age.  Especially needed and appreciated are interactive books which offer “lift-the-flap” or “pop-up” features, as well as books representing multi-cultural children and families.

rafIn Sussex County alone, Read Aloud Delaware sends volunteers to childcare centers, Head Start programs, preschools and elementary schools in 39 locations where children are read to individually at least once a week.  In fiscal year 2018, Sussex had a total of 200 volunteer readers who read to close to 3,000 children for a total of 7,500 + hours combined!   Research shows that reading aloud is the single most important factor in reading success.    Stacy Penaranda, Read Aloud Delaware’s Sussex County Coordinator, is thrilled with the BHHS Gallo Book Drive: “I’m sure that I speak for our Board of Directors, volunteers, and especially the children we serve, when I express my gratitude to the Gallo Gives Foundation at BHHS Gallo Realty for sponsoring a book drive.  Their donated books will be added to our Georgetown Library so that our volunteer readers can share them with children across Sussex County”, added Stacy.

For more information on the book drive, email [email protected].  Addresses for book drop-off:  16712 Kings Highway, Lewes; 37230 Rehoboth Ave, ext., Rehoboth Beach; 33292 Coastal Highway, Bethany Beach.
